Has anyone out there tried a newish birth control pill called Yasmin? I used to take Ortho-tri-cyclen (prior to my attempts with Ayurveda) which seemed to work reasonably well for keeping the PCOS at bay. However, a recent doctor I saw touted Yasmin as "THE pcos pill" in terms of helping with some of the symptoms and recommended that I switch.
I know that every woman's body reacts differently, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has experiences that would make them agree or disagree with this doctor...?
Thanks for your help,
d

Re: Yasmin BCP?
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 4:17 PMI've been on it for....going on 6 months now. I haven't had any sickness issues, my skin has gotten noticeably softer (my partner is always talking about it), my body hair growth has definitely slowed down, and I've started losing weight.
Three months ago, I also started Glucophage for my insulin resistance...I've just gotten my fasting blood tests done again, and my insulin resistance / fasting blood sugar levels have gone down to almost where they should be, but my cholesterol has gone up by 50 points! Considering I've been exercising more than ever in my life, eating only high fiber whole grains, low fats, lean proteins....this was quite a shock, my cholesterol (which wasn't high in the first place), should have only gone down in this time period. I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow, and will let you know if she can find any other reason, but the only reason I could find was that birth controls, including Yasmin, can make your cholesterol go up.
This is the only negative that I can associate with my use of Yasmin, if indeed it is the mysterious cause.
If there are no worries about your cholesterol in the first place, I'd say go ahead! I'm finding more direct results for my PCOS than I ever did with Ortho-Tri. -

Re: Yasmin BCP?
Sat, March 11, 2006 - 4:46 PMI'm going to try it again starting tomorrow. Since I had my right ovary removed I've had 3 horrible periods in 1 month! I'm going off depo provera - even though I loved it.

Re: Yasmin BCP?
Sat, May 13, 2006 - 6:52 PMHow can you tell which of the positive side effects (soft skin, slowed body hair growth, weight loss) is due to the Yasmin versus the Glucophage? ie did these positive effects occur in those first 3 months on Yasmin when you were not yet taking the Glucophage?

Re: Yasmin BCP?
Fri, April 14, 2006 - 12:05 PMI realize this is an old post...but wanted to post some info anyways.
Perhaps Yasmin was touted as the "PCOS" pill because it doesn't have androgenic effects. The progestins in other BCPs are derived from androgens, but Yasmin's progestin is derived from spironolactone. (spironolactone is a potassium sparing diuretic, that is also used off label as an anti-androgen...it's also sometimes used to treat PCOS)
So...if there's no androgenic effects then it won't contribute to acne, hair growth, and all that other fun stuff. :P
Oh, and Yasmin was also recommended for PCOS in "It's my Ovaries, Stupid!" by Dr. Elizabeth Vliet -

Re: Yasmin BCP?
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 12:51 PMAfter my 2nd surgery my doctor put me on this. I have bled nonstop since january so I begged to go on something else. Yes I got my depo shot today and I already feel better. The yasmin just wasn't strong enough to stop my crazy ass ovary. -

Re: Yasmin BCP?
Sat, July 8, 2006 - 1:38 PMSo I've been on Yasmin for 1.5 months now. Seems to be good for my complexion and for hair growth. No negative side effects except that it completely wiped out my libido! My Dr. told me that there's a connection between androgens and libido in women... testosterone is sometimes administered to post-menopausal women to help them (re)experience libido. He said to give it up to 3 months trial period before deciding to switch to a different pill. -
